Chew Seeks Return to RA Board of Directors

Former RA At-Large member, community activist will run this year.

Richard Chew, a former At-Large representative on the Reston Association Board of Directors, says he is seeking to return to the RA board.

Chew was on the board from 2008-11. He declined to run for re-election last March because he was caring for his ailing wife, who died of cancer last April.

Chew says he likes what the board has done in the meantime.

“I have been impressed with the addition of Amanda Andere, Mike Collins, Ken Knueven, and Andy Sigle to the board," said Chew. "I look forward to joining these directors and contributing to taking RA governance to a higher level by being more professional in its activities and more strategic in its thinking.”

There are three open seats on the Reston Association Board this year, the South Lakes district seat and two At-Large seats. Kathleen Driscoll McKee has served two terms as the South Lakes District Director and is not eligible to return this year due to term limits.

Paul Thomas currently holds one of the open At-Large seats and has announced he will not run for re-election. Tom Vis holds the other At-Large seat that is open this year. Chew would not confirm for which of the open seats he would run.

“My intent is to seek the South Lakes District seat, but the field of potential candidates is still a bit fluid, so I am keeping my options open,” said Chew.

The deadline to file is 5  p.m. this Friday, Feb. 3.

Chew was first elected to the Reston Association board as an At-Large director in 2008.  He says he showed his commitment to openness, truthfulness, accountability during his term. He also points out he was a strong advocate for fiscal responsibility and accountability; advocated for protecting the Reston “look and feel” in the face of future growth in the Reston community; and pushed the RA Board and staff to find better ways to foster a meaningful and effective dialog with members.

“I bring to this candidacy a demonstrated ability to work successfully with, and balance the often-competing viewpoints of RA’s members,” said Chew.

Chew has been active in other community groups. As a resident of Cedar Cove Cluster, Chew served on several of its committees and as president of the Cedar Cove Cluster Association Board of Directors. He was also a founding member of the Alliance of Reston Clusters and Homeowners (ARCH) and has been active in a local Reston-area Alzheimer’s support group.
