Brown's Chapel Lights Before RA DRB Tuesday

Community invited to hear more about how parking lot, ball field lights might affect them.

The Reston Association Design Review Board this week will hear plans for installation of lights for the lower baseball field at Browns' Chapel Park.

The proposal includes the installation of six approximately 60-foot tall poles with three light fixtures on each and the installation of nine 20-foot tall parking lot light fixtures outfitted with shoebox style and energy efficient LED lights.

Other elements of the proposal include running an underground power cable to the concession stand, downcast wall lighting on the concession stand, and the installation of a scoreboard on one of the ball field light poles.

The lights are slated to be installed field No. 1, the Little League field and the field closest to the Brown's Chapel building.

Affected residents received a letter from RA Parks and Recreation Director Larry Butler last week inviting them to attend the DRB meeting Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Reston Association headquarters, 12001 Sunrise Valley Dr.

"The intention is to inform the public and the DRB and to determine what other information may be needed before presenting for a decision, possibly in March," Butler wrote to residents.

Butler said no decision will be made regarding the proposal and RA staff will present information regarding lighting the ball field as well as the lower portion of the parking lot.

Funds for the lights were approved during the 2012-2013 Reston Association budget development process. RA has allocated more than $282,000 for ball field capital improvements for 2013.

Residents with any questions should contact Margo Collins at 703-435-7994, or margo@reston.org or and if you have questions about the actual proposal, please contact Larry Butler at 703-435-6501 or lbutler@reston.org.

Here's an enterprising idea! How about put some freakin' lights ON THE STREETS AROUND RESTON?!?!

Brian, you can go to: http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/dpwes/construction/streetlights/light_fund.htm for information on how that works. You must have, among other things, agreement from a majority of property owners along the street to be lit. The neighborhood must also meet certain rates of after-dark crime and accidents (so as to focus limited resources on the areas most in need of lighting). But some parts of Reston probably qualify for lighting. Personally, I don't need more street lights in Reston. I just need them to do a better job with the street signs so I can actually see what intersection I'm at without coming to a dead halt in the middle of the road.

What I posted applies only to VDOT managed roads, by the way. RA has probably got its own rules for cluster associations, etc. to follow.
