Board of Supervisors Candidate Charged with Assault in 2010

Independent candidate Will Radle received a 12-month suspended sentence, mandated anger management.

Will Radle, an independent candidate for chairman of Fairfax County's Board of Supervisors, was charged last year with assault in Arlington County, Patch has learned.

Radle pleaded guilty in July 2010 to a misdemeanor charge under an Alford plea, in which a defendant claims innocence while acknowledging that prosecutors likely have enough evidence to obtain a guilty verdict in court.

Radle received a 12-month suspended sentence. He was required to enter an anger management program, which Radle said he has completed. He is also prohibited from contacting the man he allegedly assaulted or going to an address in Crystal City.

According to Arlington County court documents, Radle allegedly assaulted a man on March 25, 2010. Radle told Patch he and the man were arguing over a parking space in Crystal City around 6:30 or 7 a.m. Radle had driven to Crystal City with his wife because his wife had a job interview.

According to Radle, while he was parking, the alleged victim began berating Radle for being in the alleged victim's parking spot. The man opened the car door and kicked Radle, who responded by shoving the man, Radle said.

"It was an altercation between two adults,” Radle said. Witnesses to the crime only saw Radle responding to being attacked, he said, which is why he was charged instead of his alleged victim.

“If I was doing something heinous, do you think the prosecuting attorney would allow me to accept an Alford plea?" he said. Patch was unable to locate Radle's alleged victim.

Radle, an insurance agent with AFLAC, recently received the endorsement of the Independent Green party after a meeting with Carey Campbell, the group's state chairman; and Glenda Gail Parker, the party's then-candidate for chairman who is known as "Gail for Rail." Parker has since dropped out of the chairman's race and is now running for Supervisor of the Mount Vernon District.
