Autumnwood Pond Area To Undergo Renovation

Nearby path will be closed during day.

Beginning Monday, Reston Association's Autumnwood Recreation Area pond will undergo an improvement project aimed at reducing velocity of flow and sedimentation.

The Autumnwood Park improvement projects are a Fairfax County Stormwater Planning Department initiative, says Nikki Bellezza, RA Watershed supervisor. The county is paying for the project, she said.

“The county recognized the Sugarland Run watershed is in pretty good shape," she said.  "They prioritized projects draining to the Autumnwood Recreation area to ensure the watershed does not proceed to degrade.”

The existing turf field and stormwater pond off Walnut Branch Road are being transformed into a series of constructed wetland cells with rock steps leading down to vegetated micro-pools in the existing detention pond location, she says.

The pathway is being used for construction access and will be closed during working hours Monday through Saturday.  The site is expected to be under construction until October 2013.

The tot lot, pool and tennis courts are still accessible, but the field and path along the pond will be blocked off, Bellezza says.
