A weekend crash that left a cyclist in the hospital was caused when she allegedly failed to stop at the intersection of the W&OD Trail and the road, Fairfax County police said Tuesday.

The crash took at 5:45 p.m. Saturday when the cyclist, a 53-year-old woman, was traveling southbound on the W&OD trail approaching Sunrise Valley Drive, according to the Fairfax County Police Department.

“The bicyclist allegedly failed to stop before attempting to cross Sunrise Valley Drive and was struck,” Don Gotthardt, spokesman for the police department, wrote in an email.
The 53-year-old driver of the 2013 Chevrolet Suburban that struck the cyclist remained on the scene, police said.

The cyclist was taken to a local hospital with injuries that police described as non-life threatening. No charges are pending in the case, police said.
The incident was first reported in a blog post by Fairfax Advocates for Better Bicycling, a local cycling group The accident prompted an .outpouring of concern from the cycling community and local residents.
