State Department Now Involved in Drowning Investigation

Parents of baby who died at Westin Reston Heights were foreign nationals.

The State Department is now involved in the process surrounding the death of a 1-year-old girl who apparently drowned at the Westin Reston Heights earlier this week.

Wreef Wafy Almutiri apparently drowned Sunday night. Police have released no other details as to where her parents or caregivers were at the time.

The girl's parents are foreign nationals, and WTOPthey asked for their embassy's involvement the night of their daughter's death. The State Department also is now involved in the proceedings surrounding the incident.

Fairfax County Police said the parents and their embassy are cooperating in the investigation. Police have not indicated which country's embasssy is involved.

No charges have been filed.
