What are the citizens who live in the 11900 block of Winterthur Lane doing to prevent such incidents in the future? What are Fairfax County police doing to prevent such incidents in the future? I've heard people make comments such as "Oh, that's just the way it is in that part of Reston; stuff like that happens all the time there." Is resignation to allowing criminal activity to reign in one section of Reston really the right answer? What's to keep it from spreading to the next block over, and then the next and the next? It diminishes the quality of life not only for those who live in that area, but also for all Restonians. It should not be tolerated or brushed off as being "just the way it is."

Nope... I'm with the "that's just how Reston is south of the toll-road" crowd... And it's only going to get WORSE as we (North Reston) push our low-income housing down your way to make room for expansion with the arrival of Metro so buckle up!

Decades ago, there was a Neighborhood Watch citizens' patrol system in Fairfax County. It seems to have fallen by the wayside, and I can see why: Criminals have become far too violent for citizen involvement, perhaps. When people involved in road rage blow each other away, why would anyone risk becoming involved in Neighborhood Watch? It's a sad, tragic situation, isn't it?

My husband and I moved out of that area about a month ago. We rented there for 1 year and 6 months. There were plenty of nights I didn't sleep due to knowing about recent crimes in the area, police helicopters hovering the woods nearby, or my neighbors getting in verbal/physical fights outside. The area is truly going downhill. Was very happy to get out!
