Update: Officials Find Cause of Greywing Fire

Investigators say blaze caused $125,000 in damage.

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department officials say a Thursday night fire on Greywing Court in Reston was accidental and originated in the home's chimney. A gas leak within the gas-operated chimney ignited by the pilot light caused the fire, investigators said.

Units responded to the townhouse fire about 8 p.m. Firefighters encountered heavy smoke and fire coming from the front of the middle three-story townhouse upon arrival. Firefighters conducted an aggressive interior fire attack and brought the fire under control in approximately 10 minutes, FCFD said.

No one was home when the fire broke out and the fire was contained to the single townhouse. One man has been displaced. Smoke detectors were in the house but were not working, investigators said.
