No Charges For Driver Who Hit Cyclist on Sunrise Valley

Cyclist continues recover from major injuries in June 29 crash.

The driver of an SUV who hit a cyclist crossing Sunrise Valley on June 29 will not be charged, Fairfax County Police said.

The cyclist was on the W & OD trail about 5:46 p.m. on June 29 when the 2103 Chevrolet Suburban was westbound on Sunrise Valley Drive. The bicyclist disregarded the stop sign and entered the highway and was struck by the Suburban, police public information officer Bud Walker said.

The bicyclist was held at fault for the crash, Walker said. However the officer elected not to issue the bicyclist a ticket.

The cyclist, identified by Fairfax Advocates for Better Biking as 54-year-old Cat Freck, an avid bike racer from Vienna,  suffered severe injuries with many broken bones. She has had several surgeries and is undergoing extensive rehabilitation, according to her Caring Bridge web site.
