Neighbor: 'Very Scary' Morning on Waterside View

Woman who lived upstairs from where fire and homicide victim were found says she heard loud argument.

The woman who lives above the apartment where a woman was found murdered and the apartment was on fire Monday said she heard a man screaming obscenities early Monday morning.

Fairfax County Police and the Fairfax County Fire Marshal are investigating the death as a homicide. They have not identified the victim or any suspects.

Amanda Hamm said she woke up about 2:30 a.m. when she "heard a heated discussion."

"I was not sure exactly where the voices were coming from, but I heard him say [expletive] you. Then it was dead quiet," said Hamm.

Hamm said she fell back asleep, then woke up about 5:40 a.m. when she smelled smoke. She could not find the source of the fire in her unit, but when the air in her apartment became hazy, she called 911.

Hamm said firefighters were on the scene 10 minutes later and broke down the door to the second-floor apartment where they suspected the fire started.

"Black smoke came out of the door," said Hamm. "It was very scary."

Hamm said she is pretty sure a man lived alone in the apartment, but she does not know his name.

The fire was contained to the one apartment, but residents of the garden-style building in the 12000 block of Waterside View Drive have been displaced while the cleanup and investigation continues, said Hamm.
