Hospitalized Camper 'Eager to Get Back to Camp' After Pool Rescue

Reston Association says it will review incident.

The child who received CPR at remains hopsitalized in good condition.

The 7-year-old boy was attending Day Camp program when the incident happened on Wednesday afternoon.

Reston Association lifeguards and Fairfax County Fire and Rescue administered CPR on site.  The boy was taken by ambulance to Fairfax Inova Hospital, where officials say they are observing the child as a precaution. He is said to be eating, moving on his own and “eager to get back to his camp," said RA spokeswoman Amelia Townsend.

 As part of its standard practice, Reston Association staff will be review the procedures followed during the incident, as the organization is always looking to improve, Townsend said.

Three lifeguards were on duty at the pool at the time of the incident, she added.

Lifeguards at Reston Association pools must be certified  by the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training program, which include 32 hours of training, standard first aid, CPR/AED for lifeguards, the ability to swim 300 yards and a timed submerged object retrieval. 

Reston Association camp counselors take 16 hours of training and senior counselors also take the same 16 hours of training, Townsend said.

Additionally, they also receive first aid, CPR and pre-medication administration training.

Both a counselor and a senior counselor were on site at the Golf Course Island Pool.  All those on site had met all the training requirements.
