According to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 15,470 people died in motor vehicle traffic crashes in the first six months of 2013.

For the same time frame in 2012, 16,150 died.

Seat belt use saves thousands of lives across America each year. NHTSA statistics show that “in 2011, 64 percent of the passenger vehicle occupants ages 21 to 24 killed in traffic crashes were not using restraints – the highest percentage out of all age groups.”

Yet, too many motorists may need a tough reminder. In 2011, 21,253 passenger vehicle occupants were killed in motor vehicle crashes, according to NHTSA, and 52 percent of them were not wearing seat belts at the time of their fatal crashes.
