Things Are Sprouting in SLHS' Teaching Garden

The SLHS Teaching Garden is sprouting!  Winter-hardy vegetable seedlings of cabbage, turnips, lettuce and onions are two inches tall and looking healthy. Our perennial herb seedlings - thyme, rosemary, mint, parsley and oregano are taking root.  These herbs will provide a year-round source of fresh seasonings to the culinary arts program.

The garden's south fence supports the "hanging garden."  Mustard and cabbage seedlings are planted in the pockets of a re-purposed canvas shoe organizer.  Cheap and fun - this proves that one can garden in the smallest spaces.  Our plants are growing well, and we benefit from extra growing space.  

Teachers and students are already working in the garden. Dr. Jenny Holah's Biology classes compost fruit and vegetable peelings to the garden's rolling composter; and plan to plant cool season crops soon.

The garden was built by community volunteers in late September with a generous grant from Whole Foods. The Teaching Garden provides learning opportunties to culinary arts, science, math and art students.
