Time to Save the Daylilies!

As June approaches, the deer begin to feast on daylily buds. Get ready to protect yours if you want to save your yard floral display!

So, it is time to dig out the DeerOff, DeerStopper, Liquid Fence, PlantSkydd, dried blood or any other method to ward off the upcoming deer brunch on your daylilies!

Two years ago, I realized on June 2 that I should have sprayed my daylily buds because about 70% of them had been bitten off. Last year, I remembered this little fact as the bud stems began to swell. I sprayed my plants with my favorite deer repellent, DeerStopper, and had the BEST season of daylilies ever!

I must confess that we had extremely minimal deer activity in our neighborhood last year. No one wanted to even talk about it, thinking we would jinx ourselves! Hoping to have the same issue this year.

At this time, my daylilies have started to pop. After the big rain yesterday, this is the perfect time to spray so that I have a decent flourish of flowers. Think about it for yourself also.

From my personal observations of this plant over time: apparently the Stella d'Oro Daylily is not appealing to deer. It is a dwarf variety and it blooms early and has a long blooming time. The picture attached is from my neighbor's yard.

I am attaching a picture of a neighbor's solution to keep a nice bloom of daylilies. They use stakes and black/nearly invisible netting to cover their plants. It works if you have the time to do it and are patient.

As an aside topic: it is time to spread your corn gluten/preen to stop the Japanese Stiltgrass from taking over your yard. I have some already popping so, this is the other task I have set to take care of tomorrow.

Enjoy!
