WMATA Wants to Hear From You

Give Metro your input on names, stations and where the money should be spent.

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) operates Meto, the regional transportation system in the national capital area, including Northern Virginia.

As we all know, Metro is coming to Reston next year. And many of our residents, including my self, commute to work using WMATA services. These services not only benefit the people who use them, they also help reduce traffic, pollution and provide a transportation service for people who can not drive due to physical limitations, perhaps an accident or vision problems and people who can not afford to own a car.

Metro is hosting a series of public meetings on its FY2013 budget and fare proposal. They are proposing to raise fares again. The proposed operating budget of $1.6 billion includes a proposed $53 million (8 percent) increase in funding from the jurisdictions and $66 million in increased revenue from fares. The two closest meetings are in Falls Church and Arlington. Open forums begin at 6 p.m., followed by the public hearings at 7 p.m.

Besides attending the open forums and testifying at the hearings, you can contribute your opinion by completing a survey from the WMATA website or submitting your comments in writing. You can visit the WMATA website to learn more, www.wmata.com.

On the WMATA website they have two surveys, one about the budget and fare proposal (wmata.com/budget) and one about naming the stations on the Silver Line (wmata.com/silversurvey).

We’ve removed the ability to reply as we work to make improvements. Learn more here
