The Early History of Reston – The Building of Lake Anne Village Center and Construction of the Dam at Lake Anne, Thursday, June 28, 2012, from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m., at the Reston Community Center - Lake Anne, 1609 Washington Plaza, Reston, VA 20190.
Robert E. Simon, Jr., Glenn Saunders, Chuck Veatch, and Fran Steinbauer, along with Reston Museum staff member Loren Bruce, will present a program on the
origins of Reston, the nation’s first large-scale planned community that changed the face of the suburban landscape in America. The presentation will cover Robert E. Simon Jr.’s vision of a “village center,” the architectural plans of
William Conklin and James Rossant, the challenges of building Lake Ann and the
Village Center, the initial sales strategy, and the ideas behind Simon’s desire to create a balanced community with a mix of uses and clustered development.
Presenters:
Robert E. Simon, Jr. is the founder of Reston, and Glenn Saunders was one of Mr. Simon’s first Reston employees and was Executive Vice President in charge of Engineering, Planning, and Construction. Chuck Veatch was the first Residential Sales Director and eventual Sales Manager, and Fran Steinbauer started out as an engineer and ultimately became the President of Reston Land Corporation. Loren Bruce has a Masters in Urban & Environmental Planning from the University of Virginia, was an urban planner with Fairfax County, and is currently in charge of special projects at the Museum.
