Taking Steps to Help the Homeless

Community Walk, mini walks to support Reston Interfaith.

Ending homelessness starts with a few steps. That is why this is a big weekend for

Reston Interfaith is hosting its eighth annual Community Walk as part of the on Sunday, Oct. 23.

Reston Interfaith needs about 300 more walkers to register for the three-mile walk in order to help reach its goal of 1,500 registered walkers, says spokeswoman Abby Kimble.

"If we have 1,500 registered walkers we will receive a $25,000 incentive from Fannie Mae," she said.

Registration begins at noon, and the walk will start at 1:30 p.m.

Registration is open and information is available at www.restoninterfaith.org  and click on news and events or call 571-323-9555. Walkers can also register the day of the walk.

Other events in support of ending homelessness:

* On Saturday, Reston Interfaith will have a float in the Herndon Homecoming Parade, and parade participants can sign up to support the program as part of being in the homecoming parade.

The parade starts at 9:30 a.m. in downtown Herndon, and will travel down Elden Street and turn onto Lynn Street. 

* Several area schools will be hosting mini walks in the upcoming weeks. Among them:

 o   Herndon High School – Oct. 20

 o   Aldrin Elementary School – Oct. 28

o   Herndon Friends Meeting – Oct. 31

o   Fox Mill Elementary School – Nov. 3

o   YMCA After School Care Program – TBD - 

o   Good Shepherd Lutheran Church – TBD

o   Crossfield Elem School SACC Program – Nov. 4

o   Lake Anne Elem School – TBD

* People can also help Reston Interfaith by registering to be a virtual walker for the National Walk to End homelessness. The walk is Saturday, Nov. 19 in Washington, DC.
