Battle of Ox Hill Commemoration Sept. 1

Revisit the Battle of Ox Hill/Chantilly on Sept. 1.

The 150th anniversary of that historic Civil War battle will be commemorated by the Fairfax County Civil War Sesquicentennial Committee and the Fairfax County Park Authority.

The event runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Ox Hill Battlefield Park, 4134 West Ox Road, Fairfax. Admission is free.

Parking will be at the County Government Center with shuttle bus service provided to event site.

The 150th commemorative event will include flag presentations, childrens' activities and crafts, artillery and infantry demonstrations, period medical displays, civilian Civil War re-enactors engaging the visitors to the park, musical concerts, wreath layings, and special guest speakers.

The fighting at Ox Hill/Chantilly, the last battle of the 1862 Northern Virginia Campaign, occurred during a fierce storm that was described as so thunderous it drowned out the cries and clamor of the battle.

Afterwards, Union troops completed their retreat to the fortifications around Washington. The Confederates turned north and crossed the Potomac River, igniting the Maryland Campaign.
