Reston Farmers Market to Open Saturday, May 3

On May 3, you will have tangible proof that spring has arrived.  The Reston Farmers Market, Number One in Northern Virginia, will open the 2014 season at its usual place in the parking lot at Lake Anne Village Center.  As is tradition, the Market will open at 8:00 AM sharp and gently close at 12 Noon on Saturdays ---through November 8 this year.                                                                               27 of our 28 Market vendors from 2013 are back for the new season.  Furthermore, the Market Masters recruited an extraordinary new grass-fed meats and home-made pasta vendor, Smith Meadows from Berryville, VA.  Third generation family farmer and author (“Gaining Ground”) Forrest Pritchard raises his grass-fed animals as naturally as you can imagine.  He rotates chickens, pigs, beef cattle, and sheep so that they are always on a fresh piece of pasture.               Thanks to the wonderful people at CORNERSTONES and the Fairfax County Park Authority staff, SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) will join the Reston Farmers Market this year.  CORNERSTONES will administer the program offering a modest subsidy to eligible local families so they can purchase fresh fruits and vegetables in the Market.                                                           Once again, the Crafts Market sponsored by the Condo Association will add to the Farmers Market festivities, giving Lake Anne Village Center the air of a dynamic grand bazaar on Saturday mornings.  Also, the Condo Association has decided to disperse the community groups into the Plaza area to make room for “craft foods” vendors alongside the Farmers Market.  These vendors will sell prepared foods into the afternoon, including, e.g., complete barbecue meals.                                                                                                                                       The Fairfax Master Gardeners will be in the Market to help shoppers with all their gardening questions and any problems they have will their plants.              That wonderful sound you’ll hear on many Saturday mornings during the season will be the Split String Soup bluegrass band joining us!                                               And, check out the newest RFM caps—with artwork by Lake Anne’s own Sarah Gerould!
