Ken Plum withdrew from $10,000 French tour following stories in the press. Now, Plum vows legislative action to curb corporate gifts.

Delegate Plum returns Corporate Travel Gift:  Sequel

As Reston Patch readers know, Del. Ken Plum was one of 14 Virginia legislators who recently accepted a $10,000 all expense-paid trip to France from Virginia Uranium, a company seeking passage of a law allowing them to mine uranium in Virginia.  When the press exposed the gift, Del. Plum withdrew from the deal.

In many states the obvious impropriety of taking gifts having more than a de minimus value from those seeking legislative favors is in fact illegal—as it should be here.  I am happy to report that Del. Plum tells me that he is now “working on potential legislation for next session that might help cure the problem.”  That is potentially good news!
