Come to Our Mini-Market Oct. 15 at the Vale School

Join Smart Markets this Saturday, Oct. 15, for a special community event at Oakton's old Vale school.

At Smart Markets, we make a serious effort to support our neighboring communities, and we keep our volunteers busy throughout the year manning Smart Markets tents at events where we can spread the word about buying local at farmers’ markets.

On Oct. 15, we will set up a mini-market as part of the Celebrate Vale community event at the old Vale school at the intersection of Vale and Fox Mill Roads from noon–4 p.m. We are thrilled to be there as part of a day which will remember that after the school was closed, it was used for many years as the home of the Extension Service’s Home Demonstration Club. We would love to help introduce cooking classes to the community again.

If you belong to an organization, a business club or a school parent-teacher organization and would like to merge your mission with ours, we would love to work with you — especially over the winter, when we are operating fewer markets and have a little more time on our hands.

I also want to remind you that Smart Markets will operate our Oakton market all year long at the Unity Church on Hunter Mill Road. If you are used to shopping at our Reston market, you can avoid market withdrawal this winter with a short drive down Sunrise Valley Drive and onto Hunter Mill Road on a Saturday morning. We will be happy to have you come for your winter veggies, local meats and dairy, Virginia wines, and homemade international prepared foods all winter long.

Our demo diva, Annie Sidley, will also be with us all winter — hopefully indoors at times. What better time than the winter to move back into the kitchen with your kids and spouses? You can work on improving your health by improving your diet and learning about all the great soups, stews and party foods that you can make from local produce in even the coldest months. This is comfort-food season, and we are here to help you and your family get comfortable in the kitchen working on those seasonal recipes we hand out every week. Come join the fun and enjoy the food.
