FCPS Unified Prevention Coalition to Host Prevention Conference

The Unified Prevention Coalition (UPC) of Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) will host a prevention conference on Saturday, April 2, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Lake Braddock Secondary School for middle school students and their parents or guardians.  

The conference, entitled Life in the Middle: What Students and Parents Face in the Middle School Years, will focus on bullying and cyber-bullying, substance abuse hot button issues, and communications between youth and their parents.  

Jack W. Claypoole, administrator, Drug Free Communities, Executive Office of the President, Office of National Drug Control Policy, will deliver the keynote address.

 Middle school parents and guardians are encouraged to attend with their children, though they will sit with students other than their own children for the presentations and small group discussions. Community service hours will be offered to middle school students who attend the conference. 

Also participating in the conference are Chief David Rohrer, Fairfax County Police; Patti McGrath, Fairfax County Neighborhood and Community Services; and Stefan Mascoll, Bryant Alternative School.

Exhibitors from local organizations and agencies will have information tables at the event.

 The UPC promotes prevention and early intervention of violence and drug use in the community.  This conference is partially funded by both a federal Safe and Drug-Free Youth Grant and a Drug-Free Communities Support Grant
