Ambassador
David Newton will present a talk titled:

The Shiite Resurgence
in the Middle East – Implications for the U.S. and Israel



David
Newton was the first U.S. ambassador to Iraq (1984-88) following the resumption
of diplomatic relations and later served as ambassador to Yemen
(1994-1997).  From 1997 to 2004, he was
the first director of Radio Free Iraq and a special envoy for public diplomacy,
traveling to Arab countries to explain U.S. policy on Iraq.

Other
State Department assignments included Deputy Chief of Mission in Yemen and
Syria, Political Counselor in Saudi Arabia, Near East Division Chief in the
Bureau of Intelligence and Research, and Director for Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, and
PLO Affairs.
