RCA Makes Suggestions for Better Bus Service

Reston Citizens Association report offers 20 ways to improve bus service to Metro's Wiehle-Reston East station.

Metro is scheduled to open its first Silver Line station in Reston in December. With the improved rail access comes predictions of a traffic mess for locals. The Reston Citizens Association has a new report on how to improve bus transportation to the Wiehle-Reston East station.

RCA also recently authored a report on how to improve Wiehle Avenue, which will surely have an impact as Metro riders use it to access the 2,300-space parking garage at the station.

The newest report, Building on Reston's Transit Tradition: Enhancing Bus Service with the Arrival of Metrorail, offers 20 recommendations.

Among them:

 * Maximize public transit service to Wiehle Station. Encourage use of public transit by making Reston bus service more frequent, reliable and easy to use, with fast, direct routes to Metrorail. Reduce or eliminate fares for shorter trips if possible, as discussed for Tysons.

 * Increase frequency of Fairfax Connector bus service on all existing rush-hour feeder routes to Wiehle Station (Routes 551-554, 557, 585), and reduce headways on these routes to 15 minutes as currently proposed. Further reduce headways to 10 minutes (the same as proposed for the new Tysons circulators), if possible.

* Extending high-frequency, peak weekday hours on all Reston Connector and feeder routes.

Restonians Speak Out on Bus Service

One hopes Fairfax County officials are paying attention to RCA's thoughtful analysis and recommendations in both this latest paper and the earlier white paper addressing broader, urgent supporting infrastructure essential to make the Silver Line a blessing NOT a curse for Reston.

Related to the bus changes discussed in the RCA paper, WMATA is sponsoring a single open house at RCC/Hunters Woods on March 14, 5PM-8PM, regarding changes in Metro and bus transit related to the opening of the Silver Line at Wiehle. According to the flyer, "You will have an chance to view informational exhibits about the Silver Line, speak with and ask questions of Metro representatives, and learn what changes are planned for the Orange and Blue Line service, as well as local buses. Metro seeks public feedback as the plan continues to be refined." This may be Restonians only opportunity to see how its new bus service interacts with the new Silver Line when Wiehle Station opens at the end of the year. I have not seen anything about plans for non rush hour bus service to and from the Wiehle Station. If the routes for RIBS busses are not changed and made more frequent, it wll be very difficult for many of us to avoid driving to the Wiehle Station in hopes of finding a parking space. I am retired and work part time in Rosslyn. I live on the RIBS 2 line. If I catch the RIBS 2 bus on South Lakes Drive, I must travel to Hunters Woods, the Herndon-Monroe parking garage, and Town Center, before, finally, heading for the Wiehle Station. I now drive to the Sunset Hills north parking area to catch the 555 or 505 to East Falls Church. Will I be able to commute to work after the Silver Line opens without taking a tour of south Reston on my way to the Wiehle Station?

Great question, Robert. Actually, one of the recommendations in our report is to provide two-way service on the RIBS 2 route, so that people like you will not have to travel in a full circuit before reaching the station. The service provided by Route 505 will largely be covered by the new Route 959, but as you may know, the Sun set Hiplls North lot is scheduled to close, so the new route will not serve it. We will continue advocating for improved RIBS service! The RIBS 2 recommendation was one of several we made for improving RIBS service to the Wiehle station.
