Kids Turn Treats Into Cash for Charity

Reston Halloween candy buy-backs net thousands of dollars for good causes.

Reston children may have collected hundreds of pounds of candy on Halloween, but charities also benefited from the treats at local candy buy-back events.

At orthodontist Stephan Tisseront's seventh annual candy buy-back, patrons donated 1,396 lbs. of candy. For each pound, the office gives families $1 and donates $1 to Children's National Medical Center. Dr. Tisseront's donation to the hospital this year was more than $3,000.

Reston Serenity Smiles collected more then 300 lbs. of candy. For every pound of candy, the firm give children $1. The office sent the candy, along with dental hygiene products, to  troops overseas via Operation Gratitude.

Participants at the Serentiy Smiles event also donated their earnings to Operation Smile and contributions were matched by the office.
