Halloween Fun: Family Fun and Haunted Houses

Haunted houses, terrifying trails and ghastly ghost tours in Herndon, Northern Virginia.

It's the time of year when people go out looking for things that go bump in the night. 

Halloween and the weeks before it are full of local haunted houses, ghost tours and frightening forests. We've got a list of local places to go to find yourself scared silly or just have some Halloween family time.

At Reston Community Center, the Halloween Family Fun Day will take place on Oct. 20 from 12 to 2 p.m. For more details, click here.

• Bradley Farm Haunted House, Herndon
This year's haunted house will feature The Evil Around Us: Horrifying Local Legends, based on scary stories from around Virginia. The weekend of Oct. 26 and 27 only; proceeds benefit Herndon-Reston FISH.

• The Haunted Forest at Halloween Woods, Sterling
Visit the haunted forest, where you'll walk through outdoor paths filled with ghouls and ghosts. Halloween Woods also hosts the Run Zombie Run 5K on Oct. 14.  

• Footsteps to the Past Paranormal Tours, Alexandria
Head down to Alexandria to learn about the history that still haunts the area. Join paranormal investigators on the search for ghosts.    

• Cox Farms Fields of Fear & Dark Side Hayride, Centreville
Head to Cox farms for a scare at the frightening Fields of Fear or choose a different adventure on the Dark Side Hayride.

• Shocktober at Paxton Manor, Leesburg
Visit the haunted Paxton Manor in Leesburg. The manor was built in the late 1800s and is filled with large rooms and dark hallways.

• Ghost and Graveyard Haunted Tours, Alexandria
Join a costumed historian as they lead you on a tour of Old Town Alexandria's haunted locations. Special Halloween tours are available. 

• Fright Night, Ashburn
Head to Ashburn to explore the Fright Night woods and be prepared to be scared. The haunted trail offers surprises around every corner.  

• Leesburg Ghost Tours, Leesburg
Head to downtown Leesburg for a walking ghost tour. Learn about paranormal investigations in the area and more.  

• Haunted Occoquan Tours, Occoquan
Visit historic Occoquan for a walking tour that's filled with tales of ghosts and things that go bump in the night.

Just a quick update - The Halloween event at the Walker Nature Center, now in its 15th year, has sold out of tickets for all four event times for later this month. Buy your tickets for next year's event during the first week of October in 2013. Ken Rosenthal Naturalist Walker Nature Center
