Visions For Vacancies: Hunters Woods

What should go in this spot where At Play Cafe used to be?

This week's Visions for Vacancies takes us to  where a storefront next to Ledo's sits empty.

The space at 2254 Hunters Woods Plaza used to house At Play Cafe, a children's play space. At Play Cafe closed in May 2011

The space has been vacant ever since, and the child-friendly hand painted walls from At Play Cafe remain.

What would you like to see open here?

I want a Taco Bell! Can't think of anything else that would get my attention.
Melissa S. July 24, 2012 at 12:33 PM
Noodles & Co. or a Hallmark store
Melissa Baldwin July 24, 2012 at 12:57 PM
How about a Dollar Store. I know many people in Reston "poo-poo" on the idea but it would be nice to have one in the area.

Ledo should expand and update the interior. Have you ever seen Ledo in Fall Church or in Winchester? Much bigger than Reston and nicer decor. Dan M.

We really need the same type of business in this space that we lost. There really isn't much in the immediate area for younger kids to do. It was a real blessing to have an option they used to offer on Saturday nights. You paid a small fee and your child would be fed and entertained for a few hours so you can do errands or have a date night with your spouse. The doors would be locked and the kids would be safe inside with the staff. The problem around here is that real estate is just too expensive for smaller businesses to survive. Perhaps a law should be passed in Reston where smaller businesses such as single location mom and pop stores wouldn't have to pay as much rent in order to survive and thrive in the community versus franchise based multiple location type of businesses. Hopefully someone can change the way things are done around here. I am sure there are plenty of people who would just love to start their own business but again real estate rental properties are outrageous.

Hooters

Chipoltle. There is talk of putting one in at the SL shopping center where parking is terrible. This location would be better.
Karen Goff July 24, 2012 at 02:51 PM
Chipotle at SL is a done deal, not just talk. Permits in place and renovation underway.
Karen Goff July 24, 2012 at 02:51 PM
With two of each nearby, not likely.
Molly O'Boyle July 24, 2012 at 02:56 PM
Since food seems to be the trend, I think a soup and sandwich shop would be great.
Maggie July 24, 2012 at 04:12 PM
I wouldn't mind a pho place close to the house. Even better, convince the Pho 75 owner to move there, and then they can raze Tall Oaks.
Cindy July 24, 2012 at 04:16 PM
Will a parking garage be built at SL. I avoid going there during mealtimes because parking is such a mess. Glad it is coming to our neighborhood but do not look forward to the parking.
Cindy July 24, 2012 at 04:16 PM
Great idea - Pho 75 would be a good addition too.
Karen Goff July 24, 2012 at 04:20 PM
I like that idea.
Karen Goff July 24, 2012 at 04:20 PM
Cindy - No parking garage in the plans.

Did you know that a new Hallmark store has opened up in the Fox Mill shopping plaza? Same location as the old hallmark!
Karen Goff July 24, 2012 at 04:50 PM
Sarah - yes, we wrote about it a few months ago when they opened at Fox Mill. that is one of the two stores nearby to which i am referring.

How about another branch of a major international bank? With direct links to the latest on LIBOR. Call in CHISELER'S CHOICE!
Diane Blust July 24, 2012 at 05:25 PM
I like Maggie O'Boyle's suggestion for a soup and sandwich place - preferably locally owned and serving local food!
Sarah burton July 24, 2012 at 05:40 PM
How about a POP UP Gallery until they can rent it? I'd be happy to get the ball rolling if I get a "YES! Send me an e-mail if this is something of a possibility moosenchick1@verizon.net

Not to change the subject, but why are there so many vacancies in not only the shopping centers but the buildings as well? I would think that an area that is "desperately in need of more development" would be filled to the brim and areas available for leasing would be nearly non-existent.
silent July 24, 2012 at 07:41 PM
A chipotle would be great.
m.e. July 24, 2012 at 09:44 PM
We really need a business like At Play Cafe. There's nothing similar in the area. It was such a great service to the community: a place where kids could play safely, and parents could relax.

A Mongolian grill type restaurant - but not the chain (BJ's). Fill your bowl - choose your noodles or rice, veggies, protein (chicken, shrimp, tofu, etc.) and sauces/condiments (or make your own), and they cook it on a grill in front of you. There used to be a great one in Bethesda, and still is one in Columbia. The only thing I miss after moving over the river to Reston.
me July 26, 2012 at 06:11 PM
We need a color me mine!
Brian July 31, 2012 at 04:58 PM
Either a local based restaurant (nothing against chains but we need some variety) or something like a hobby store, toy store, or a Greeberry's would be great. Is anyone else horrified by the cosmetic changes at the center? UGLY!!

Not a chance with the Buffalo Wing Factory in that same plaza.

maybe a stand alone starbucks and close the starbucks at Safeway, That is what happened at South Lakes Villiage Shopping Center the Safeway use to have starbucks there, but that shopping village, already, had a standalone starbucks. The Oakton Giant use to have a starbucks in the store but they closed, since there was a standalone starbucks already there.
