Visions For Vacancies: Home Depot Center

Busy strip mall has corner vacancy. What should go here?

For this week's Visions for Vacancies, we take a look at the Shopping Center at the intersection of Reston Parkway and Baron Cameron.

The Express 7 Food Store recently closed. The space, located at the corner of the retail strip just opposite Home Depot's garden center, remain unoccupied.

What do you think would do well in that spot? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Know of an empty space that would make a good Visions for Vacancies topic? Tell Reston Patch editor Karen Goff kareng@patch.com. And follow us on Facebook and Twitter.

How about a small local farm store? Something like the Maple Avenue Market or the Local Market in Falls Church? How many of you would come out to support a store that sells only local food? No strawberries in January - unless it's strawberry jam canned earlier from local berries. If this idea intrigues you, get in touch with Sustainable Reston at info@sustainablereston.org .

I'd like to see a Taco Bell! It would then be convenient to where I live.

A Mom and Pop type convenience store would be nice.

I think that place *was* a Mom n' Pop convenience store. It was just poorly run and didn't have a good vibe to it. But I agree, it actually is a good spot for a convenience store...maybe a *real* 7-11 should go in?

Love this idea.

An organic food store or an Asian market. I like the idea of local only, although the selection would be pretty limited in the winter.
Diane Blust July 17, 2012 at 07:01 PM
Gina - You are absolutely correct that the products in a local only store decline in number during the winter months. But there are locally available products - just check out the Maple Avenue Market in the winter months or Smart Markets Oakton. There are local apples that have been kept in cold storage, root vegetables, meats, dairy, greens and even some fresh veggies grown in a few local hydroponic green houses. Did you know there is a coffee roaster in Reston? While the raw ingredients may not be local, the value added portion of this product is definitely local. I think there are plenty of local small food enterprises in the area, enough to make it worthwhile to open such a store.

How about more parking?? That parking lot is a nightmare. I avoid that center at all costs.

Maybe in the slack winter months, local home bakers could sell their products... Local products sold in local communities keeps the money in our community. win/win/win

A frozen yogurt shop would be nice. Right now, the only place to find frozen yogurt is in Town Center, where parking is often a problem and it's expensive.
RareRestonRationalist July 17, 2012 at 10:57 PM
Obviously a frozen yogurt shop. It'll be the natural waypoint for those on the Reston Frozen Yogurt Crawl as they go from Reston Town Center to the soon to open Sweet Frog at North Point

I love the idea of a local goods shop but would rather see it at one of the north point vacancies. The Home Depot parking lot means I'll never shop over there.

I have a vision of a vegan pet shop. A vegan pet shop in the most confusing parking lot in Reston.

A cheap Mexican restaurant with a liquor license. No chain!
The Convict July 18, 2012 at 01:57 AM
How about a methadone clinic with a needle exchange program? There are so many people that need this service and I'm not sure that such services are available in our area.
the-stix July 18, 2012 at 07:46 AM
Simply expand Home Depot and improve the parking lot and access. Small specialty shops such as local only, yogurt shops, Asian foods, etc. would do much better in more accommodating locations.

Yeah because North Reston has a bustling Asian community LoL!

Naked Pizza could expand and have more seating (if you haven't tried their ancient grains pizzas yet, you should!!)
