Pure Barre Reston Brings Elements of Yoga, Ballet, Pilates to Workout Routines

Pure Barre Reston to open in Reston Town Center this year.

Pure Barre, a form of exercise that combines elements of Pilates, yoga and ballet, will be coming to Reston Town Center in late February/early March 2014.

Pure Barre was founded by Carrie Rezabek Dorre, who developed the technique and opened her first studio in Michigan in 2001.

"It's basically small, isometric movements that help strengthen arms, legs and core," said Jenn Ward, the studio manager for Pure Barre in Reston. "But it's also meant to take place within a fun, uplifting atmosphere that helps people feel good and have fun while getting a good workout in. There's not going to be a trainer getting in your face or people screaming at you to do better, we try for a much more welcoming atmosphere."

Ward says the first thing people think of is how they'll have to place their leg on the barre, which can be three or four feet off the ground, but that's not the case.

"It's meant to be very low impact, so it's easy on your body. We have clients as young as high school and college all the way up to women in their 60s and 70s," she said. "As long as you can stand next to the barre, you're good. You don't have to be flexible enough to put your leg up there."

The idea is for participants to gradually build on the techniques they're learning, the same way they would in a yoga studio.

"It's not focused on breathing, or meditation the way yoga is, but we do want to instill a sense of confidence," Ward said. "Once you take a few classes and get your rhythm down, then you start getting into the poses. We want this to become a community within Reston, a place where you walk in and see familiar faces all around, and there's no pressure to push yourself to do things that are out of your realm."

Packages are available with unlimited classes per month, or a certain number of classes per month.

Pure Barre Reston will be located at 11990 Market Street, in the Midtown Building next to the Subway. More information can be found on their website, Facebook page, on Twitter and Instagram
