Netflix Price Increase Likely to Irk Local Customers

Will you stick around when prices rise?

DVD rental and streaming company Netflix announced on Tuesday that it will increase its membership prices by as much as 60 percent.

There will no longer be $9.99 monthly unlimited DVD-rental and streaming combination plan. Instead,Netflix will now separate DVD and streaming services into two separate plans, each priced at $7.99. A combo plan will still be available for $15.98 a month.

There will also be a standalone DVD rental plan that lets the user check out two discs at a time for $11.99 per month. For $7.99, users check out one title at a time.

With closures in the last few years of Reston's Hollywood Video at Hunters Woods and and Fox Mill, Reston has no more video stores, surely leading thousands of Restonians to use Netflix.

Will you stick with Netflix despite the price increase? Rent movies from RedBox at See what the has for rent? Go to your cable's On Demand feature more often? Let your neighbors know what you are thinking - and if there are other video options to explore.

When you want to borrow videos (no cost involved) from FCPL, remember that you're not limited to what Reston has on hand. You can borrow from any branch in the system. That said, the selection might not be what you're looking for. Personally, I think we'll be dropping Netflix. We so rarely watch TV/Movies that it doesn't seem worth the money to continue, especially if we can hook the laptop to the big screen and use Hulu to watch most of what we were getting from Netflix.

I'm not a member, but I can't imagine that such a significant price increase wouldn't spark an outrage from customers. Customers don't typically leave over phased, small price increases... but drastic price changes like this will definitely drive some customers away.
