Future of Magruder's Unclear

As rumors spread about grocery store closing, employees and residents are left without answers.

Magruder's Supermarket — the anchor of the Vienna Shopping Center at Courthouse Road and Maple Avenue — could leave Vienna sometime this month.

But neither employees or customers seem to know when, or why.

Rumors about the store's closing began last week; as days went by, shelves started seeming more and more empty.

A store manager who answered the phone Friday said they had heard rumors from customers, but had not been contacted by the DC-area chain's headquarters.

An employee who answered the phone Monday said "it was a possibility" the store would close, but a final decision had not been made, and he had no closing date.

Magruder's closed its Silver Spring location this summer.

Several calls from Patch to Magruder's Company headquarters have not been returned, nor have attempts to contact the shopping center's management, The Rappaport Companies.

Patch will update this story as more information becomes available.

I don't care much for Trader Joe's but if one goes into this location -- you'd better hope that the town does a much better job on revamping the parking than it did at the Park and Maple location when the Chipotle/Noodles strip went in. That strip has grossly insufficient parking and the same is going to be true if a TJ's goes into the Magruder strip. The current parking situation is bad enough in front of Magruder's; if it stays the same but a Trader Joe's goes in, it will be a nightmare with too much traffic and people circling and circling for spaces (as they do at the TJ's over in Falls Church), etc. And do we really need another grocery store along Maple? I guess it's better than another huge drugstore. But I'd love to see some local business go in that spot. Not shocked to see Magruder's close. That particular store has always seemed dark and dirty (some people posting here don't seem to care about dirty, cracked floors with tiles pulled up and missing, but I do) and the selection is not good.

...the parking situation at that shopping center makes in a perfect candidate for a Trader Joe's ;-) .Almost every TJs I have gone to has had horrific, awful, white-knuckle parking lots (like the one on Rt 7 and off Pickett!)...

I don't consider myself a huge, compulsive neat freak but when there is rotting produce scraps on the floors, as well as grime on the floor that has been there for decades, I don't think I'm being an "uptight NoVa snob" about cleanliness/sanitation and basic food safety. It has nothing to do with local business vs corporate behemoth, but just basic safety, not to mention inviting atmosphere to shop. There are plenty of small, simply furnished locally owned stores that don't look like the back of a loading dock...

I would love it if they would put a Trader Joes in its place!!!

Not sure Trader Joes would open a store that could significantly cannibalize their Falls Church store...but would great if they did open. Word from some local merchants is that an asian supermarket -- a la H Mart -- will be opening in Vienna in the Magruder's space.
