New Look for Reston's Bow Tie Cinema

Reston Town Center movie theater's renovation is nearly complete.

As the holiday movie season gears up, local movie fans will be able to watch a film on an IMAX-sized screen, right here in Reston.

The new, 2,000-square-foot screen is the centerpiece of the redesign of the Bow Tie Cinema  at Reston Town Center.

Bow Tie Cinemas of Connecticut bought the theater from Rave Cinema in the spring of 2011.  After a series of minor renovations later that year,  Bow Tie began a large scale construction project in the theater.  Everything will be complete by Thanksgiving weekend, says the company.

“The four horrible auditoriums – they’re gone,” says Joseph Masher, Bow Tie’s chief operating officer. Masher was referring to the four small auditoriums in the theater, where the theater’s previous management often showed films that were slightly past their prime.

In their place, and throughout the building, are 11 reconstructed and refurbished auditoriums, all with stadium seating, digital projection and 3D capability. And there is what Bow Tie calls the “BTX” – short for Bow Tie Extreme – an IMAX –sized screen with 30,000 watts of sound.  Bow Tie will generally reserve this theater for films - such as the new James Bond movie, Skyfall - that are expected to be blockbusters.

“After Skyfall, we’ll be showing the final Twilight movie and then Life of Pi,” in the BTX theater, Masher says.

Some other highlights:

  • A bar on the upper floor.  The company is currently awaiting a license to sell beer and wine.
  • Expanded and upgraded concession stands and cafes. The theater now sells casual dining hot foods, such as hamburger sliders, chicken tenders and pizza.
  • Fully renovated and upgraded restrooms.
  • A party room with large table, chairs and a small kitchen area.
  • Renovated décor throughout the building.
  • An upstairs outdoor patio to open next spring.

Besides its regular slate of first-run movies, Bow Tie offers a series of specials on various days and evenings. They include “Retro Classics,” such as Fast Times at Ridgemont High, a Shakespeare festival, “Bow Tie Rocks,” featuring famous filmed performances such as The Doors Live At the Hollywood Bowl, and a holiday film festival. Check the theater’s website for specific dates and times.

We recently went to see a movie here. I liked the new seating, but the thing that impressed me the most was the friendliness of the staff! Once we were inside, the staff were VERY nice - all smiles and jokes with my children. We don't often go out to see movies...but we had a great experience here last weekend!

I agree about the staff comment above. We have been to the Bow-Tie a few times during the renovation, and am impressed with their commitment to the remodel. But the harder part is the staffing, and they make for a complete experience. Well done. We are glad to not have to travel to Brambleton or Leesburg - and Skyfall on the BTX was excellent.

What'll impress me more is if the BTX experience will cost less than some of the other ridiculous theaters. I loved that the prices were down during the construction and the experience was juuuust fine.

I'm so happy they remodeled this theater. I love that Bow Tie is so into making this theater a success. The remodel is really nice, the staff is great, they brought back $6 Tuesdays after Rave had gotten rid of them, and they do fun things. They showed the original Halloween on Halloween, which we went to. I've also been to some of their CineClassics, and saw Miracle on 34th Street and A Christmas Story there last winter.

It does not matter who is bringing this item to the forefront: rules should not be adjusted everyRead More time it is convenient. I seem to remember someone who just had to resign because they no longer lived in Reston. Not having been privy to all the politics in town, any adult with a functioning brain should have known or been told by their expert real estate agent, that the property being purchased was not within Reston boundaries and thereby disqualifying them from office within the established rules.

Molly-you have hit it on the head! We shouldn't be starting down this slippery slope of ruleRead More changing for 1 person.I do not know this individual , but that is not the issue here.

If the RA Board approves this self serving move by another RA Board member then the board membersRead More who do so should be voted out of their roles the next time they run for election.
