Widespread Power Outages Disrupt Afternoon in Reston

Underground cable caused power outage for more than 1,000 customers Monday.


Update, Monday, 3:45 p.m.

All customers ' power was returned by about 2:30 p.m. Monday. The cause was an underground cable malfunction, a Dominion Virginia Power spokesman said.

A widespread power outage hit Reston Monday at about 1 p.m.,  causing major businesses such as Whole Foods and Target to go dark and traffic lights to stop working.

Dominion Virginia Power is checking on the cause of the outage. About 1,030 customers are affected, said Chuck Penn, spokesman for Dominion.
 
The Fairfax County YMCA Reston branch reported about 1:15 p.m. that it is without power.. Many Twitter users in Reston said their offices were dark and some employers were letting them go home for the day. Other social media reports said traffic on Reston Parkway was jammed but police officers were directing traffic.
