'Blonde' Has Lots of Fun

Reston Community Players Present "Legally Blonde: The Musical"

The Reston Community Players’ fall production can be summed up in a few words: Big. Splashy. Pink. Blonde.

Legally Blonde, The Musical opened last weekend and continues Friday at 8 p.m. at the CenterStage theater at Reston Community Center.  The musical, based on the popular movies starring Reese Witherspoon, also earned seven Tony nominations during its Broadway run.  Joshua Redford, who is directing the show in Reston, said he picked it because it is nearly impossible to walk out of theater feeling bad.

“It’s a very fun musical,” Redford says. “You’re singing all the songs as you’re leaving the theater.  And it’s a great family show.”

The show centers around sorority girl Elle Woods, who went to college to get her M.R.S. degree. She’s expecting a proposal (and so is the whole sorority) from her boyfriend. But instead he informs her that he’s off to Harvard Law School, and she’s not nearly smart enough to keep up with him in school – or in life.

So she enrolls as well – intent on proving him wrong – and of course, things end up quite differently than what she would have imagined.

But even with a light, feel-good show, there are challenges, director Redford says.  Rarely does a Reston show feature 25 actors, as this one does. The size of the cast, the number of scene changes, the size of the set and the complexity of staging meant that the players couldn’t stage a full rehearsal in their practice hall in Herndon.

“We had to wait on some things until we came here,” to CenterStage, Redford says. “We have a large cast in a small space,” he says. “It’s the first Reston show for many of them. We have a lot of new faces.”

Legally Blonde: The Musical continues for the next three weekends. Show time is 8 p.m. on Oct. 19, Oct. 20, Oct. 26, Oct. 27, Nov. 2, and Nov. 3.
