Virginia State Championships Dance Through Reston

Hundreds of ballroom dancers hit the Hyatt Regency Reston dance floor for fun and prizes this weekend.

Why are hundred of ballroom dancers at the Hyatt Regency Reston this weekend?

They are there - sparkly ballgowns and great posture and all - for the Virginia State Dancesport Championships.

From Friday to Sunday, couples will samba, cha-cha, even do the hustle all day and night to win honors (and cash prizes) in a variety of professional and amateur categories.

The youngest competitor level is age 16, and many on the floor are well into their senior years.

"I think it is wonderful," said Anita, dancer in her 60s from Charleston, SC. She took up the pastime a couple of years ago at a philanthropy event. The Reston even is her third competition.

"Dancing brings joy," she said.

The competition continues Saturday from  8 a.m. to midnight and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. It is open to the public (admission begins at $20; click here for more info).
