These Hurricanes Were So Bad, Their Names Were Retired
Which hurricanes do you remember?
With the naming of the first tropical storm of the 2014 season on Tuesday — it's name is Arthur — we wondered about some of the names that will never darken the door of the National Hurricane Center again.
Why? Because the NHC, in an annual meeting with the World Meteorological Organization, banishes storms that are so deadly or costly that the future use of its name on a different storm would be inappropriate for obvious reasons of sensitivity, according to the NHC.
(Click here to see all of the 2014 hurricane names.)
If it's decided that a storm's name will be banished, the offending name is stricken from the list and another name is selected to replace it.
Which letter of the alphabet has seen the most names retired? The C's and I's have it, with nine apiece. Here's the list of all the hurricane names that we'll never see again.
