The Eagles Are Back

Reston resident Beth Burns snapped these photos of bald eagles by her home near Lake Audubon Saturday.

Burns says eagles were resting in the same spot exactly a year ago.

Meanwhile, another eagle was spotted lying dead on the side of the road on Sunrise Valley near South Lakes Drive on Thursday.

It is not known how the eagle died, but animal control was called to take the bird away.

I didn't see any adults. These were not large juveniles - probably 2nd year - based on showing my photo to a ecologist at work and this website. http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Bald_Eagle/id I know that the photo posted is from last year - this is wonderful that we have now had bald eagles for three years in a row!

For those interested, there's lots of good eagle info and a cam - though it's temporarily down - in Maryland at Blackwater Falls - a nice day trip. Lisa, the web/cam/blog person, is extremely knowledgable, and has been generous in years past answering my questions. Check out the eagle FAQ. http://www.friendsofblackwater.org/camhtm2.html

Blackwater also has a nice Eagle Watcher's Guide in a PDF, with an Eagle fact at the bottom of each page - maybe nice for parents/kids. http://www.friendsofblackwater.org/watchersguide.pdf

A neighbor saw one of the adults a couple of days ago.

Two adult bald eagles were just in the same tree in our yard where we've seen them before. A crow was harassing one of them. : ) My camera wouldn't turn on and by the time I got my phone to try to get a photo, one had taken off. The other followed shortly after. They were heading toward the Audubon public ramp.
