Sneak Peek:South Lakes Turf Field Construction

Community partners expect the fields should be completed in time for fall sports.

If you've seen South Lakes High School's athletic fields lately, they aren't quite in the shape they used to be.

But the heaping mounds of dirt are a good sign of progress for the school, which broke ground last month on a project that will replace grass playing fields with two synthetic turf fields in time for the fall athletic season.

The project - which will install turf at the school's stadium field as well as on a practice field - has been a several-year undertaking, as the school applied for a Fairfax County grant and also amassed money from community partners.

At the end of last week, two large dumpsters sat just beyond where the 50-yard line used to be. Toward the endzone, crews worked to flatten the ground in preparation for the next round of work.

The South Lakes High School Athletic Booster Club will continue to post pictures of the fields' progress throughout the summer. To see updates, click here.
