Reston Town Center Skating Pavilion Raises More than $5,600 on Opening Weekend

Record-breaking donation is half of the Reston Town Center Ice Skating Pavilion's proceeds from opening weekend.

The Reston Town Center Ice Skating Pavilion raised a record-breaking donation of $5,697.50 for Reston Character Counts! Coalition during the rink’s opening weekend in early November.

“We’re elated that Reston Town Center Ice Skating Pavilion was able to raise such a large donation for us this year,” said Cate Fulkerson, president of Reston Character Counts! Coalition.

As a long-standing tradition, this organization receives 50 percent of opening weekend proceeds from the Reston Town Center Ice Skating Pavilion, which opens annually at the beginning of November.

The 2013 donation is almost double the amount raised from the 2012 opening weekend.

Fulkerson said that Reston Character Counts! Coalition will put the funds to good use through 2014, supporting Ethics Day at South Lakes High School in November, Reston Kids Triathlon, the annual Cornerstones Best of Reston event and other charitable initiatives to support character-building for students in
the community.

Character Counts! is a national, nonprofit, nonpartisan, character education initiative designed to help youngsters and adults develop and practice the basics of good character: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and
citizenship.

The Reston Character Counts! Coalition assists this effort by providing leadership, coordination and resources to promote character development throughout the community.

The Coalition members include Reston Association, Reston Community Center, Reston Interfaith, Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce, Reston Citizens Association, YMCA of Reston and the office of Fairfax County Hunter Mill District Supervisor, Cathy Hudgins.

Reston Town Center Ice Skating Pavilion presents its weekly programs Rock ‘n Skate on Fridays from 8 p.m. until 11 p.m., and Cartoon Skate on Saturdays from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.
