Part of Reston's Largest Tree Falls

Storm damages tulip poplar that survived stream restoration.

A Reston Patch reader reports that one three trunks of Reston largest tree fell victim to thunderstorms last week.

The tree by the Glade Stream was halfway to the ground on Saturday, slowly breaking up the trees that were holding up its immense weight, with occasional loud cracks as the wood broke.

By Sunday, the tree had broken through and fallen to the ground, taking the tops of three other trees with it.

The tulip poplar tree, located near the Snakeden Branch, was the largest tree in Reston when the circumference was measured at the four-foot height - owing to the three trunks that grew out of a common base.

The trunk that fell was the southwestern side of the tree.  During the recent stream restoration project, the Save The Glade group made sure that Reston's largest tree was protected from the construction work on the stream that literally wrapped around its base.
