Hyatt Park Ready for IPAR Work Installation

Public art supporters gather to get site ready for aluminum sculpture this fall.

Supporters of public art in Reston gathered Wednesday for a ceremonial groundbreaking at Hyatt Park at Reston Town Center - soon to be home to a major work of sculpture by Baltimore artists Mary Ann Mears.

Mears was selected by Initiative for Public Art Reston in 2011 to create the piece. It will be officially installed in September at the small park directly across President's street from the Hyatt Regency Reston.

Mears' aluminum sculpture will involve several curved, colorful 18-foot structures. A model of it was on display at Wednesday's event and the concrete base is already in place.

Mears told Patch earlier she tried to keep Reston's relationship with nature in mind when designing the work.

"There is a challenge with the aesthetic and feeling of Reston Town Center," Mears said. "It seemed to me, to put a piece of sculpture there, it should have a dialogue with the architecture. You want to create a sense of anticipation of [walking into the Town Center]"

Hyatt general manager David Eisenman said he hopes the public-private partnership between IPAR and the Hyatt will be the first of many projects to come.

"This will transform Hyatt Park into a very special place to be," he said.
