Hey, Lebron - Make This Guy Your Intern

A Herndon High grad's bold and unconventional job application is getting noticed across the country.

All evidence suggests that Herndon High graduate Griffin Harrington has a promising career ahead of him - and it's one that he hopes will soon earn him a spot next to his hero, Lebron James.

To put it lightly, Harrington is a sports enthusiast, particularly when it comes to basketball.

His dream is to have a career in sports media, using all manner of tools such as photos, video, and the Web and social media to capture, document and market sports teams and players like his hero, Lebron James.

"I aim to use my creative skills in photography, editing, writing, direction, and advertising to market your brand and your message," Harrington describes on his website. "Instead of making the final buzzer-beating basket of the NBA Finals like you, I dream of being the only person in the building getting the picture of the crazy celebration that follows."

And, he's already well on his way, with an internship at Getty Images Sports Desk in New York City, an internship with Congressman Ed Perlmutter of Colorado on Capitol Hill, and photography and video of more than 200 basketball games in the last three years, all under his belt.

He also won the Washington Post High School Photographer of the Year award his junior year at Herndon High.

But, the one job he wants the most is the one he hasn't gotten yet - an internship with the Miami Heat's Lebron James.

But, he's not giving up - and he's hoping the unique and unconventional job application he recently created will do the trick, and that James won't be long to ring his phone once he sees it.

Harrington has created one big splashy billboard of a website that he hopes will soon grace the screen of Lebron James' smartphone or laptop - and it's one that screams "pick me" in a big way.

It's his own original website, entitled, simply, "LeBron James - I Want to Be Your Intern."

"I created it in just a few hours on a Friday night," Harrington says.

The website is an eye-catching mash-up of a resume cover letter, photo and video portfolio, and love letter to Lebron James, all in one.

Once you get past the front page of the site, which visually shouts "Lebron, I'm Your Guy," Harrington has the site set up as a letter from himself, describing who he is and his passions - he describes himself as a guy "who's never had to work a day in his life, or at least it's never felt like it" because he loves sports media so much - and then neat, clean portfolio and "Contact Me" pages.

Harrington says, since creating the site, he's been pounding the pavement hard, just trying to get it in front of Lebron James, convinced that the basketball star will want him if he just sees the site.

He says he originally saw an article on The Huffington Post that Lebron was looking for interns. So, he started out by contacting the author of the article and sending him a link to his site. Then, from there, any site that ran a story on Lebron's search for an intern got an email, along with any Lebron James fan sites or sports blogs that mentioned the internship.

"I'm just trying to really go for it, and try to take it from a different angle," Harrington said.

He added, he knows that Lebron James is a popular guy, so he knew "just a resume and application probably wouldn't get it."

So far, Lebron James hasn't come calling, but he said, the site is getting a fair amount of attention - roughly 350 Facebook likes so far, and a lot of sending the link around by viewers - and he's already gotten a call from two other internship opportunities in Washington, D.C., wanting to make him an offer. Harrington said he's already been in talks with the Miami Herald to possibly do a piece on him and his efforts soon, as well.

"It's been awesome for me to use this knoweldge [of marketing my website] not just for Lebron, but to get the search out for jobs because of it," Harrington told Patch. "So, even if I don't get a call from Lebron, it's been a win-win situation for me so far."

Harrington said, in the meantime, while he continues to promote the site and wait for Lebron's call, he is working a local internship this summer with Wolf Trap Performing Arts as an in-house photographer.

That is, until Lebron calls, of course.
