Restonians come out to kick off Robert E. Simon's 100th year.

A large crowd filled Lake Anne Plaza on Saturday to celebrate Reston's 10th annual Founder's Day organized by the Reston Historic Trust.

Reston founder Robert E. Simon celebrated his 99th birthday on Wednesday, and Saturday's salute to him kicked off a series of celebrations for his 100th - and Reston's 50th- year.

"It is special kind of people who build communities," said Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-Va. 11th), one of many local dignitaries at Founder's Day. "But almost no other people who can excel at what Simon did. He had a vision, an idea - and the rest is history."

The crowd was entertained with musical numbers by Reston singer Beverly Cosham; the South Lakes Theatre Arts Department, which performed a few songs and the Reston Chorale's Bobby Pins singers.

Simon arrived on the plaza via pedicab and blew out a single candle on a special cupcake.
