Fourth of July, Reston-Style

Independence Day events, here and nearby.

From sparklers on your front lawn to full-blown fireworks, from a 5K to a Sousa spectacular, here are some options to find a way to celebrate the Fourth of July.

Presented by Potomac River Running, the Firecraker 5K is a fast loop around the Reston Town Center and local roads. Race starts at 8 a.m. Cash awards; food and prizes following the race. A portion of race proceeds benefit the =PR= Award for Excellence. Registration and information at www.potomacriverrunning.com.

Guests who dine at on Monday, July 4 from 10am to 4 p.m.  will receive a brunch gift certificate equal to the price of their meal (minus tax and gratuity) for a future brunch visit.  The rest of the day Mon Ami Gabi will  be toasting with red, white (wine) and frosty brew specials! will host a July 4 celebration at l from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.  The event will include a DJ, contests, prizes and food available for purchase. The event will be canceled in the case of rain.

Cost: Free, open to all.

will open at 7 a.m. on Monday, July 4. will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. (and usually hits capacity around noon). Vendors will be on hand with food and treats. Other attractions include pony rides, a petting zoo, moon bounces, field day family games, carousel and more. The fireworks will begin at about 9:15 p.m.

Cost:  Free to enter the park, some attractions have an associated cost. Water Mine admission is separate.


A little Sousa anyone? Rousing tunes and patriotic music from the sensational "Band of the Nation's Capital".  Bring a blanket or lawn chairs to the, American flags optional, but appropriate.

Other Celebrations:

The Town of Herndon’s Fourth of July Celebration begins at 5 p.m. Monday, July 4 at with small rides, bounce houses and more. At 6:30 p.m. festive food will be on sale and games, bingo, arts and crafts activities and more will begin. The fireworks will begin at 9:30 p.m. and will be choreographed to music. Bring a blanket or a lawn chair!
Cost: Free, though some portions will have an associated cost.

Town of Vienna Celebration

Activities begin at 11 a.m. with children’s entertainment, music by Vienna Community Band (11 a.m.), Ron Moody And the Centaurs (12:15 p.m.) and Fat Chance (7 p.m.)

In addition to the music, enjoy arts and crafts, Chili Cook-off, rides, antique and classic car show and more.

Fireworks scheduled to begin at 9:15 at Yeonas Park (1319 Ross Dr SW Vienna) .

Cost: Admission is free, but some associated costs for food and activities.

Fourth of July Celebration at Claude Moore Park

Claude Moore Park (51544 Old Vestal’s Gap Road, Sterling) will offer pony and wagon rides, musical entertainment, and songs and skits from The Wizard of Oz. Other activities will include face painting, children’s crafts, nature exhibits, Historic Lanesville House tours, Reptiles Alive shows, food and drinks and more. Celebration starts at 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Cost:  $5 per person for those 5 and older. Free for children 4 and under. 


City of Fairfax Carnival, Parade and July 4 Celebration

The City of Fairfax will host a  on the July 4 weekend with rides, music and games. The  will take place on July 2, 3 and 4 from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. The city will also hold an  from 10 a.m. to noon on Monday, July 4, and an  will be held at Fairfax High School that night, which will include a .

Cost: Fireworks and parade are free, there are associated costs to the carnival.

If you travel a little further, you are rewarded with the biggest fireworks display in Virginia.

In addition to the fireworks display, aerial acts will perform all day including eight R-44 American Helicopters, Model rocket launches and sky diving demonstrations

A "Rain Machine" will be on hand for the kids,  shooting water 75 feet into the air to cool them off  plus  pony rides, a petting zoo, facepainting, cake walk, polo demonstration

Live music from the Relayer, Nitehawks, and Cobbler Mountain Grass bands and  food provided by on-site vendors serving funnel cakes, snow cones, BBQ,

Gates open at 4 pm. 

Cost: each car is $30 for an advanced ticket sale; $40 at the gate. Tickets can be purchased online.
