Food critic revisits Reston restaurant - and not thrilled with what he sees.
Washington Post food critic Tom Sietsema's 2012 Spring Dining Guide is out. In it, he revisits several Washington-area restaurants to see how they are holding up a few years later. In 2008, Sietsema liked what he saw at Reston Town Center's Passionfish. In 2012, not so much. Sietsema calls Passionfish's cioppino "wan" and its sushi "gloppy." He gives Passionfish one star. Read the entire review by clicking here. And let us know in the comments: Do you agree? Reston Patch tried to get a table there Friday night, and the wait was over an hour, so many diners probably enjoy the food more than the Post critic.

State Senator wraps up Richmond at McLean appearance.
Virginia State Sen. Janet Howell, D-Reston, spoke to members of the Greater McLean Chamber of Commerce on Thursday, recapping this year's tumultuous Virginia legislative session in which she "went viral." “It was a very unfortunate session in so many ways — divisive and rancorous. But I think things are getting better,” she told a breakfast gathering of about 25 business people at J. Gilbert's in downtown McLean. "It was so disappointing for so many reasons. I can imagine the public watching in horror and saying, 'They are turning into Congress,' " she said. The Virginia State Senate had prided itself for not being like gridlocked Congress, she said. Marcus Simon of Ekko Title, said, "It's great that she took time to tell us what happened …

Supervisors received an update about the potential revenue generated by participating in Metro's Silver Line project.
A presentation about the potential fiscal impacts of Metro on Loudoun - if the Board of Supervisors agrees to participate in Phase 2 of the Silver Line project - clarified some questions, but also appeared to fuel arguments for those for and against participating. The presentation by Len Bogorad, the managing director of Charles Robert Lesser & Co., the company that conducted the fiscal impact study, showed that commercial developers would be drawn to the county with or without rail. However, he also said there would be lost opportunities without Metro because businesses would be drawn to rail stations to the east. Supervisor Suzanne Volpe (R-Algonkian) said the decision the board must make is huge. In an earlier meeting, someone called …

Satellite firm files Chapter 11 but vows to keep working.
Dulles Corridor Rail Association outlines reasons to go forward without project labor agreement.
The Dulles Corridor Rail Association sent a letter to the Metropolitan Washington Airports Association (MWAA) late last week asking that the project labor agreement (PLA) be dropped and outlining why the Silver Line Phase 2 must be completed as envisioned. "We support efforts to stop the PLA preference and substitute language in the procurement process calling for effective management of workforce issues in a manner that conforms with right to work law of Virginia; and find new funding sources (federal, state and private) to explore alternative funding mechanisms to reduce financing costs and the burden on Dulles Toll Road users," wrote Del. Ken Plum (D-Reston), the chairman of DCRA, and Patricia Nicoson, the president of the group. DCRA …

A trio of panelists promoted the opportunities they believe rail to Loudoun represents as partners await Loudoun’s decision.
Attendees of Wednesday's Loudoun Chamber of Commerce’s breakfast discussion on proposed Metro service to Loudoun heard more about a study that touted the positives impacts and that the commonwealth might be willing to pay more than the $150 million recently approved. While the breakfast session focused on the study Stephen S. Fuller, director of George Mason University’s Center for Regional Analysis, performed on the projects financial impacts to the region, Virginia Sec. of Transportation Sean T. Connaughton told the audience the state may contribute more once some things are worked through with the Washington Metropolitan Airports Authority. “The governor, who is from Northern Virginia, knows is it critical to extend rail to Dulles and …

New card store opens to replace longtime shop that closed in June 2011.
When Susie and Jack Hauslein retired and closed their store, Jackie Lynn's Hallmark, last year, they lamented the shaky economy and the fact they could not find a new owner for their store at Fox Mill Shopping Center. The Hausleins operated the store at 2553 John Milton Dr. from 1995 until last June. The space sat vacant until last Friday, when the owner of three local Hallmark stores moved one of her existing shops to the location. Lisa Gaudette owns Hallmark shops in McLean, Alexandria and Oakton. She shuttered the Alexandria store several months ago, but says she was pleased to find the Fox Mill vacancy. "This is just the kind of community we were looking for," she said. Merchandise is still being moved in, but Shelby's has a wide …

I ate there the first year it opened and didn't see what the fuss was about. While I can't recall specific dishes, I have never been back. I agree the wait staff was attentive and the decor was pleasing but the food was no better than than a chain restaurants $15 offering. In fact, I had a salmon dish at Silver Diner a week ago that was better than the meal I had at PF. Too bad really. I enjoy …   more ›
