Snow Season, Neighborly Season

You can feel the first significant snow in Reston is right around the corner!  This is a great opportunity for neighbors to engage in a dialogue in advance that can help everyone and bring community together in a meaningful way.

I learned about this community building technique from a friend who lives in Maryland.  Every year around this time her neighborhood sends out an email asking residents

  1. if they would like help shoveling their walk
  2. if they would like to help others shovel their walk

The communication brings to the "table" those neighbors who might need some help and those neighbors who want to help.  The same neighborhood does a similar communication in late Spring to solicit families willing to host others if someone loses power or air conditioning in the heat of the summer.

This type of dialogue is a key goal for the Reston for a Lifetime iniative. Whether you want to help make these community connections a reality, or if you have a story of how your neighborhood stays connected, please join us!

On the topic of community connections . . .

Reston for a Lifetime volunteer, Cherie Lejeune is following up with the successful community event she organized at Lake Anne Fellowship House last month. She needs more neighbors for a similar event at Hunters Woods Fellowship House next week!

Hunter Woods Fellowship House Urgently Needs Volunteers!

Friday, Dec. 16 is the HWFH holiday luncheon and an additional seven volunteers are needed to help serve and bus food to the tables.  The hours: 12:30-1:30 p.m. will begin to serve at 1:00 p.m. If you can help with this event, please contact: Cherie Lejeune 203-400-3668 or email her at latripp24@gmail.com

Good community-building ideas. And somehow they seem especially appropriate for Reston!
