The event was co-chaired by John Alciati, former president and CEO of GRACE, and Damian Sinclair, current GRACE Executive Director. Did You Know: Sharon Bulova is a Doodler!

You may think twice about telling your kid to stop doodling.

If you've ever wondered what Sharon Bulova, Chair of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, is scribbling under the microphone during those incredibly long public hearings, it turns out that she's a lifelong doodler. In addition to her duties as a public official for 25 years, Bulova has run more than a few pens dry by making cartoon likenesses of her colleagues. The drawings tell a sort of truth — from a certain point of view. Once you see them, you'll never mistake the mustache of U.S. Rep Gerry Connolly (D-11) for another, or the familiar dome of Mount Vernon Supervisor Gerry Hyland.   "Since becoming Chairman, I don't draw and doodle as much as I used to," Bulova told Patch from her office in the Fairfax County Government Center. "I …

Reston Woman Brings Volcanoes to Life

Longtime resident and author Terry Jennings publishes an educational children's book on what may happened at Mount St. Helens.

When you’re asked to write a book about volcanoes, it helps to be from Reston – home of the U.S. Geological Survey.   So Terry Jennings took full advantage of her location when preparing to write a children's book. “I went to USGS and checked out everything they had on volcanoes,” says Jennings, an author who specializes in educational material for children. “They had a lot on Mount St. Helens.” Even better. The editor she was working with was interested in a picture book on how animals reacted to the May, 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens, so she used the information from USGS and followed up with a Mount St. Helens scientist. The result: Gopher to the Rescue, an educational picture book just published by Sylvan Dell. The scientist “was …

Gallery: "Out of Place" at Lake Anne

Lake Anne Plaza's waterfront was turned into public art and a performance space Sunday with the debut of Out of Place. The installation was presented by the Reston Community Center, the Initiative for Public Art Reston, Friends of Lake Anne and the Reston Museum. It was conceived by architect Ronit Eisenbach and dance artist Sharon Mansur, who were inspired by the history of the planned community of 1960s New Town of Reston and the sculpture and architecture of Lake Anne Plaza. The installation will be on view through May 21. Sunday's accompanying dance performance explored the ways we perceive, shape and inhabit our world. The dance performance featured a duet featuring Mansur and longtime collaborator Daniel Burkholder.

Dodgeball Theatre Brings 'The Breaking Point' to the Stage

Dodgeball Theatre's "The Breaking Point" explores chaos and beauty.

Dodgeball Theatre is bringing its original production, The Breaking Point to the stage starting May 6. The show is the ensemble’s artistic interpretation of chaos and beauty, and was created after months of work, and shares their perspectives with their audiences. The students involved in the ensemble created the production from its inception, starting with writing prompts in the fall that eventually turned into monologues.  The writing prompts can be simple or philosophical, for example they may be asked to write about the last time they were angry. The group comes up with a theme to decide which monologues they may include in the show. This year they discussed chaos and what good can come from chaos. The group also gets to help create …

Dark Comedy on CenterStage

Reston Community Players present the Pulitzer Prize-winning 'August: Osage County.'

Reston Community Players'  production  of August: Osage County, a Pulitzer Prize-winning play with darkly comic, adult themes, continues Friday at the Reston Community Center's CenterStage. “This has a dark side to it,” says Andrew JM Regiec, director of the play. “But it also has a lot of humor. The dialogue is so frank, and witty.” August: Osage County tells the story of Beverly Weston, a once-famous poet who is now battling addiction to alcohol and pills. Seen only in the beginning of the play, he disappears, leaving his highly dysfunctional family to assume he is dead. (He is.) They gather at his home to take care of the funeral, and each one melts down in his or her own way. Regiec says the play is notable for the range of ages in the…

So, in other words, you wouldn't have a problem with these same two peer groups running the streets of Reston waging a petty turf war because it makes for great "Love Conquers All" art? I just wonder whether you embraced or complained about MS-13 when they were "more" active in our community.   more ›
