Fairfax County stopped by Reston's future Wiehle-Reston East Metrorail station to take a look at the work in progress.

The station is scheduled to be finished in August, and the Metro is slated to open in December 2013.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if those glass panels on the station were solar panels? Such a shame that we are so far behind countries like Germany and Denmark when it comes to renewable energy...

I agree. But, does Reston even allow solar panels where they can be seen?

The Dulles Toll Road and the Metro stations are not part of Reston Association.

Yes Reston allow's solar panels Cynthia, but will not, most likely, allow your neighbor to paint his or her house pink, apply a yellow roof and surround it all with a cyclone fence.

As Dale said, they do allow solar panels but I don't quite understand why RA doesn't allow any individuality. Dale, I probably wouldn't put up a cyclone fence but it sure would be nice not to have to have that ugly Reston Brown on everything!

Has anyone found out why there is a crosswalk and escalator on the south side of the toll road and who is paying for it?

That link returns "Page not found". I did see the article on Dec 5 last week if that is the one referred to, but it did not state why the crosswalk and escalator were being built or if the funding was separate from the main sources. It just said there would be no parking in the lots and violators would be prosecuted, and that walk-up pedestrians could use the escalator/crosswalk, but it would not be convenient. It seems as if they will serve mainly a selected private access.

It is being built by Metro, not privately. The crosswalk and escalator are being built so pedestrians can access metro from the south side. Surely there will be some people trying to park over there, on private property.

I don't know that violators will be "prosecuted" per se, but the office building owners might enforce ticketing and towing. That is the real issue - why access is over there but no public parking.

There's a cut and paste error in the above link - an almost invisible leading hyphen.

Thank you, Bob, That was the problem.

Great to see metro moving away from its traditional hexagonal glazed tiles for the platform - those are lethally slippery in wet conditions. Picture 4 shows what look like large concrete slabs with a honeycomb pattern, if so, those should do better in rain and snow :)

There is a bus drop-off area on the South Side of the DTR, as well as giving easy Metro access to the adjoining office complexes.

Karen is incorrect, it is not "being built by Metro" but is included in the Dulles Rail Project costs, most of which is paid for by our tolls. If it's like the rest of the project, we're paying twice what we should for it, due to MWAA's cost escalation.

There are better ways to fix our transportation problems. Go to www.notollincrease.org for more information.

Dear No Toll Increase,
Who are you? Do you live in Reston? and why don't you want people to know who you are?
