What should go on this corner in North Reston?

This week's Reston Patch Visions for Vacancies takes a look at the old Blockbuster Video storefront at Northpoint.

The space has been vacant since March od 2011, when the video store closed as part of a national downsizing of the video store chain.

What do you think should open in its place? Tell us in the comments below.

I was unhappy to see the California Tortilla suddenly close. I haven't seen this many vacancies there in the 10 years I've been living in Reston

Oh, boy - was I ever glad to see Calif. Tortilla close. I know everyone has different tastes, but I didn't know a soul that liked their food, especially compared to Chipotle.

It's like you people have never been to Reston or something LoL!
-We need a third Chipotle like we need a hole in the head.
-A VA placement agency?!?!?!

The DMV Select wasn't the worst idea... We could use that... North Reston is getting younger and younger each year and I'd like to see a sports bar.

My husband was sad about California Tortilla also. As for the Blockbuster spot, maybe some kind of indoor play area for kids? There aren't many indoor activity places for kids around here and in the cold winters and really hot summer days a place like that would be a great.

I know they will never allow it, because of the lease restrictions and Giant having pharmacy type items- but we need a real pharmacy/drugstore.

Otherwise, a Corner Bakery, Au Bon Pain, Le Pain Quotidien or Pret a Manger .

Great Idea - a bakery type place would be great! Even a Dunkin Donuts (no, not even close to the other bakeries listed) would kill here - anyone wanna open a franchise with me?

California Tortilla is a poorly run place, the quality of their food is sub par, they were once Great!, but like Chicken Out, they fell into the category of quantity over quality.

What should open there should be something locally owned with a west coast twist.

Sad to see Cal Tort close their doors as well - would much rather see Jerry's Subs or BK go away! North Point could really use a cool brunch location - even a mini Denny's or IHOP would do really well, though the Blockbuster may be too small. Maybe Cafe Sano would be willing to open another location?

Another Cafe Sano would be great!! But, I am sorry, a Denny's or Ihop is not the kind of business I would like to attract to the area. There is a reason those places are 24 hours.

Cafe Sano Norrh in the Blockbuster site, and a really good taco bar, like Teocalli Tamale used to be, in the other site!

There is a wonderful Cajun restaurant on Mt. Vernon Ave in Alexandria - "RT's." I would love to see them open a location in Reston! It's quiet. Fabulous, authentic entrees; white tablecloths (cloth, not paper); servers (men and women) wear white shirts, ties and aprons tied at the waist. It has been a "special occasion" restaurant for Kathy and me for many years. Crawfish Etouffee!

Any of you been to Mokomandy, up in Ashburn? Totally awesome restaurant! And I think it would actually do even better closer to Reston. (for the record, I don't work there) But...yeah a modern bakery type place would do spectacularly there. Spacious, kid friendly, fast-ish, inexpensive.

That space should be used for a hydrocolon therapy spa and catchment basin for all of the seriously fecally impacted people who think another Cafesano would be a good thing.

We could also use a Waffle King because Reston clearly doesn't have enough gap-toothed, redneck waitresses in its diversity pool. Tatoos optional, of course.

There is a First Watch in Fairfax. The line is out the door every weekend, and even the picky eaters I bring to there like the place. Been there for a while too, and it's not going anywhere.

I love the Mokomandy quality restaurant idea. I also believe that such a place wouldn't be in competition with the other "eateries" at North Point, as it clearly would be appealing to a different demographic. Also, "Mandymoko," would give us an alternative to the hustle and bustle of the quality dining in the town center.
For the record I don't work there either!

I would love a bar! But, there are major lease restrictions. I highly doubt they would lease to an establishment classified as a bar. Mamma Lucia’s has a tiny bar and ZERO specials that would attract a nice, responsible :) bar crowd.

Great minds think alike... But I don't see Momma's as being a stopping point. This place needs to be a sports bar to bring some life to the shopping center!

Better yet, why don't we start talking about what we are going to do with the incredibly useless soccer fields BESIDE North Point?!?! That could easily be developed into North Point 2 with a Wegmans, a sporting goods store, a Cold Stone, etc...

Why is the soccer field incredibly useless? Seems like teams use it a lot. AS far as I know there are no plans to redevelop it.

Those fields are used maybe a dozen times a year and they occupy roughly 25,000 square feet while bringing in zero tax dollars and employing zero people. If that isn't the very definition of "useless" then I don't know what is.

I beg to differ on the "dozen times per year" part. My son played Reston Youth Soccer and for several years his games and practices were held at that field. So they are probably used a dozen times per week for half the year.

I agree with Karen. I also see frequent pick-up games at that field.

The last thing we need to do in Reston is eliminate ball fields and other green space when the population is expected to keep getting bigger, causing an ever-increasing demand for recreation opportunities.

Everyone sees this coming; but no one is doing anything about it. We are witnessing the beginning of a commercial/retail real estate vacancy problem in the Reston/Herndon area along with emerging pockets of economic decline. If focus continues on more and more speculative new development while ignoring re-development of centers like Hunters Woods, Lake Anne and Tall Oaks, we will be taking one step forward while taking two steps back. Developers will develop as long as commercial lenders provide financing, regardless of need. How many small businesses will we lose to rising rents? The real question is not what business should go into an individual vacant building; but how to re-vitalize the existing struggling retail centers?

The other problem is unless you're a big chain franchise, it's still difficult for anyone to get a loan to start a small business.

We don't need more places where Americans, Restonians, can get more fat and stupid. Skip all the food and booze places. I'd like a good gym. Not much space there, though. Maybe they could push out the eye glasses place - does anyone even go in there?

Another on my wish list: evict the ham store. Other than a couple or three times a year, it seems positively vacant. I'd love to see an upper level (second story) to North Point, full of executive-style single-occupancy/shared offices, for folks that telework but find too many distractions at home.

I like the yoga studio idea. But like another commenter, I think Starbucks should take the space. There are other Starbucks with big tables where volunteers can hold meetings and kids can study or meet tutors or people can work. It has great light. And they could expand on the breakfast and lunch food they currently offer.
