Traffic's Going To Get Worse, So What's Reston Going To Do About It?

Master Plan Task Force hears from experts on how to make five trouble spots less trouble.

Metro's 2013 arrival in Reston will be accompanied by thousands of new jobs and new residents, which could make traffic go from bad to worse on several major roads.

Last week, county traffic experts presented to Reston Master Plan Special Study Task Force members  possible options to ease congested intersections near the future Wiehle Avenue station.

The county plans to revisit zoning in the Reston area in preparation for Metrorail’s arrival at Wiehle in late 2013. The task force is studying predicted residential and commercial density levels in an effort to make a land-use recommendation for the county.

The Fairfax Times has a report detailing the worst spots and how to deal with them. Read the recommendations here.

Sayeth Fairfax County's High Priests of Development:

"Metro's 2013 arrival in Reston will be accompanied by thousands of new jobs and new residents, which could make traffic go from bad to worse on several major roads."

Yes, if they install a rail system, jobs will just start magically falling out of the sky, so you had better re-zone everything, get some developers con-men ......er..... I mean sales reps, to go overseas and find some suckers .....er..... I mean investors to finance these buildings because no one in America with an ounce of sense would be stupid enough to fall for such a scheme.

Reston's "shining star to overdevelopment" sits at the corner of Sunrise Valley and Hunter Mill road ... you've all seen it....a, what, 10 story building that's completely unoccupied with no tenants EVER...EVEN AFTER 10 YEARS!!! Look around. The people making "For Lease" and "Space Available" signs are the only ones in the county making an honest buck off off over development.

The installation of a choo-choo train is NOT going to bring jobs. Do you REALLY think people will uproot themselves, likely at a loss, just to be near a choo-choo train? Will companies actually uproot and move, costing millions or tens of millions of dollars, just to be near a choo-choo trains? And all this is to be going on while the Federal government is being downsized along with it's contractors.

I've lived in Reston for 20 years and watched the whole place blossom! Before there was RTC there were trees and birds and georgeous landscape to watch shooting stars. Now that every major IT and government consulting firm is here, there are people and traffic from hell. I feel the metro will greatly reduce stress and traffic for the locals who work in DC or points north east and inside the beltway. It's a shame this is only happening now.

For the previous commenter, yes, more jobs and more people do come. Centerville rd and sunrise valley area has had a major increase in Indian population for the growing imported IT professionals, they uproot their entire families and move HERE! It's not only that area, it's everywhere. People want the ease and access of a train while being able to enjoy suburbia. If you think the metro coming to Reston is a bad idea, any of you, you need to get your loose bolts tightened!
